Caprock Canyons Texas State Park

With a dedicated herd of bison that roams the park, Caprock Canyons State Park deserves to step out of the shadow of nearby Palo Duro Canyon State Park.

A Driving Tour of Caprock Canyons Texas State Park in Quitaque, Texas.

In 1975 the State of Texas purchased the land that had formerly been the J.A. Ranch established by famed cattleman Charles Goodnight. By 1982 the land was turned into a Texas state park, and established as a permanent home for the herd of Texas plains bison that Charles Goodnight protected from extinction.

The state park is located near the town of Quitaque, Texas. Ranchers settled the area and began working the land around 1876, and soon after the railroad came through. There is significant archaeological evidence that humans have inhabited the area for over 10,000 years.

In addition to the protected herd of bison, Caprock Canyons is known for the beautiful red hue to the rocks.

There are many activities at the state park. In addition to camping, there are also hiking and biking trails as well as swimming.
