Join me on a driving tour of Hunters Creek Village in Texas. Hunters Creek Village is part of the Memorial Villages. The Memorial Villages are areas that are surrounded by Houston, but not part of the city. Hunters Creek Village is its own independent municipality. When the city expanded into areas that were formerly suburbs on the west side of town Hunters Creek and the other Memorial Villages did not get annexed into Houston. Hunters Creek is a residential neighborhood with many single family homes and big leafy trees. The population of Hunters Creek is less than 5000 people. The homes in Hunters Creek are very large. It is a quiet suburban neighborhood with many families. 

Where is Hunters Creek Village?

Hunters Creek Village is located on the western side of Houston just south of I-10. The western edge of Hunters Creek Village is It is about 2 square miles of almost entirely residential houses and roadways. It is predominately bordered by Hedwig Road on the west and Lindenwood Drive to the east. The northern border is I-10 and the southern boundary roughly follows the meandering Buffalo Bayou. The major roads that run through Hunters Creek Village are Voss Road and a stretch of Memorial Drive. Hunters Creek Village is entirely located within Harris County, Texas. 

History of Hunters Creek Village

Hunters Creek was incorporated as a municipality in 1954. It was originally settled by German immigrants and was known for having a sawmill. In the 1950s a number of suburbs began to be developed in the surrounding area. In the 1960s Houston annexed a lot of other unincorporated communities in the area. Since Hunters Creek, as well as some of the other Memorial Villages was already incorporated they did not get incorporated into Houston. This has created a small island of suburbs within Houston.

What are the Memorial Villages?

The Memorial Villages are a collection of four suburbs on the western side of Houston that did not get incorporated into the City of Houston as the city expanded and annexed unincorporated areas nearby. There are four municipalities that make up the Memorial Villages. They include Hunters Creek, Piney Point, Bunker Hill and Hedwig Village. Collectively the villages have a population of approximately 50,000 people. All  four villages are predominately suburban residential areas with mostly single family houses. The four villages work together to share resources and municipal services between each other. 

Hunters Creek Village Schools

School District

Hunters Creek is predominately zoned to Spring Branch Independent School District (SBISD), as opposed to the much larger Houston Independent School District (HISD) that most parts of Houston are zoned to. SBISD is not solely students living in the Memorial Villages, many parts of Houston are also zoned to SBISD.

Memorial High School is for grades 9 – 12 and there are about 2,500 students who attend the school. The mascot is the Memorial Mustangs. Memorial High school has a student to teacher ratio of 17.5 students per teacher.

What is there to do in Hunters Creek Village

Most people living in Hunters Creek take advantage of the amenities nearby in Houston for recreation. Hunters Creek is a short distance from City Centre and the Galleria which are two large shopping areas. 

Visiting Hunters Creek Village

There are no hotels in Hunters Creek, but there are some hotels nearby in Houston. There are a number of hotels near City Centre and near the Galleria. Hotel Zaza Memorial City is very popular and not too far away.

Housing in Hunters Creek Village

Most of the housing in Hunters Creek is single family residences. The average home price is very high. Unlike nearby Houston, Hunters Creek has zoning and strict deed restrictions. The minimum lot size for a home is half an acre. Houses in Hunters Creek are very expensive and sought after.
