History of Friona, Texas

The community was originally called Frio, after the cold water in the area. It began to be settled next to the XIT ranch, one of the largest ranches in Texas. In 1906 plots of land were marketed to settlers for farming.

Businesses began to open up and by 1907 there was a post office. The city was officially incorporated in 1928.
