The historic jail was opened in 1895 and earned the nickname Red Top due to its red roof. The jail was in operation until 1982. It was built out of locally quarried granite, but many of the parts were brought in from St. Louis.
The jail is four stories tall and had gallows on the top floor with a trap door underneath. The building has been restored and preserved.
