Big Spring State Park – Decelerated Travel

Big Spring State Park is one of the parks that was built by the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) and opened in 1936. Unlike most state parks, this one is located inside of a town. It is smaller than most of the other state parks and is only open during the day. There is no overnight camping available at the park.

Cost:

There is no entrance fee for Big Spring State Park.

Reservations:

It is possible to make reservations to enter the park online, however it is probably not necessary unless you are wanting to reserve the large group pavilion for an event.

Facilities at Big Spring State Park

This park does not offer overnight camping, nor is there any swimming.

Restrooms are available in the park. The restrooms do not have showers because this is a day-use only park. There are also picnic tables, a dedicated picnic pavilion, and a playground.

Hiking Trails

There are three trails through the park.

The nature trail is the shortest trail, but goes up the side of the hill.

The main route through the park is a three mile loop. It is a paved mixed use road that can be used by hikers, bikes and vehicles.

There is a longer unpaved hike and bike trail that is five miles long.

The main activities at the park are to use the hiking trails, play on the playground, or have a picnic.

Visit the town of Big Spring

Heritage Museum of Big Spring has exhibits about the history and cultural heritage of the town of Big Spring.

Hotel Settles is an elegant hotel that has been renovated to its original 1930’s style. The hotel has a spa and a swimming pool. Settles Grill and the Pharmacy Bar and Parlor are also part of the hotel.

Hangar 25 Air Museum is free to enter, but donations are recommended. It is in a WWII airplane hangar. The museum has information on the former Big Spring Army Air Force Bombardier School and Webb Air Force Base.

Comanche Trail Park is a city park in town that is very close to Big Spring State Park. There are numerous hike and bike trails, an amphitheater, playgrounds and a fishing lake.
