Choke Canyon State Park

Choke Canyon State Park built along the 75 Acre Lake.

The park is split into two sections. One section is the Calliham Unit, which has camping and overnight guests. The other section is the South Shore Unit, which is only available for day use.

Location

358 Recreation Road 8, Calliham, Texas 78007

Cost

The entry fee for Choke Canyon State Park is $5 per person over the age of 13. There is free admission for people ages 12 and under.

There are additional fees for overnight stays which vary depending on the type of lodging or campsite.

To save money when visiting Cedar Hill State Park, I recommend looking at a Texas State Parks Pass. The pass costs $70 a year. The benefit of the pass is that it allows the pass holder, and any passengers in their vehicle to enter the park without paying the day use fee.

Reservations

Reservations can be made in advance online. Reservations can be made for campsites or for day use. Reservations should be made as soon as you know your plans.

This is a popular park that often reaches capacity, even for day use. If you do not have a reservation you may be turned away at the gate.

Cabins are available for $50 per night. The cabins are more basic than many of the cabins at other parks.

These cabins have lights, electricity, and air-conditioning. They do not have attached bathrooms or kitchenettes.

Tents are allowed around the cabins, and pets are allowed on a leash outside the cabins. There is a covered porch area with a picnic table, and water spigots are outside the shelter.

Restrooms with showers are available in the vicinity, but not at the individual cabin.

Group Facilities

This park has a lot of group facilities.

There is a primitive youth camping area for large groups.  It is $15 per night for groups of up to eight people. There are picnic tables, lantern posts, and fire rings and a covered pavilion. This is a walk-up primitive camping area, so there is no water, electricity, or bathrooms at the site. Restrooms and drinking water can be accessed in the day-use area.

The sports complex has a full air-conditioned gymnasium that can be rented for a day rate.

There are also group halls with kitchens and pavilions available.

Hiking Trails

There is Bird Trail that is half a mile long, and a hiking trail that connects between the campsite loops and day use area.

What is there to do at Choke Canyon State Park?

You can fish in 75 Acre Lake. Fishing does not require a license from the shore in state parks.

Swimming is allowed in the lake as well. There are no lifeguards on duty and alligators live in the park.

The park is a popular location for birding, because it is on the migration path for many birds from Mexico.

Play sports, such as basketball, tennis or soccer.
