Lake Colorado City State Park

Lake Colorado City State Park opened in 1972. It is on a man made lake that was built in 1949.

Cost

The entry fee for Lake Colorado City State Park is $4 per person over the age of 13. There is free admission for people ages 12 and under. Discounts are available for groups. 

There are additional fees for overnight stays which vary depending on the type of lodging or campsite.

To save money when visiting Lake Colorado City State Park, I recommend looking at a Texas State Parks Pass. The pass costs $70 a year. The benefit of the pass is that it allows the pass holder, and any passengers in their vehicle to enter the park without paying the day use fee. 

Reservations

Reservations can be made in advance online. Reservations can be made for campsites or for day use. Reservations should be made as soon as you know your plans. 

This is a popular park that often reaches capacity, even for day use. If you do not have a reservation you may be turned away at the gate. 

Staying at Lake Colorado City State Park

Campsites

Campsites with water are $15 per night. They have a picnic table, shade shelter, and fire ring with grill. There is water, and bathrooms with showers are available in the vicinity. 

Campsites with electricity are $20 per night. They have a picnic table, a shade shelter, and a lantern post. There is water, electricity, and a fire ring with a grill. Bathrooms with showers are available in the vicinity. 

Pull through campsites with electricity are $22 per night. They have a picnic table, shade shelter and lantern post. There is water, electricity, and a fire ring with a grill. There are restrooms with showers in the vicinity.

Cabins

Cabins that sleep six are $60 per night. Cabins have electricity, air conditioning, and water. There is a fire ring, a grill, and a picnic table. There is a small refrigerator, a microwave, and a table with chairs. There are two sets of bunk beds and bathrooms with showers are in the vicinity. Pets are not allowed in the building. 

Group Facilities

There is a group hall with a kitchen and a pavilion available to rent. 

Restrooms in Lake Colorado City State Park

There are bathrooms provided throughout the park. Restrooms in the camping loops have showers. There are also restrooms near the picnic area by the lake.

Hiking Trails

There are only two hiking trails at the park.

Cactus Cut Trail is one mile and goes by the edge of the lake. 

Roadrunner Loop Trail is 2.1 miles and is a little more difficult of a hike. 

What is there to do at Lake Colorado City State Park?

You can fish in Lake Colorado City. Fishing licenses are not required for fishing from the shores of a state park.The lake is 1,618 acres and has a fishing pier.

Swimming is allowed in Lake Colorado City. There is a dedicated swimming area with picnic tables nearby. Dogs are not allowed in the swimming area. 

Kayaks are available to rent in the park to use in the lake. 

Try your hand at nature photography or going birding. White-tailed deer, mallard ducks, raccoons, and armadillos live in the park. 

Have a picnic near the lake. There are two playgrounds for children. 

Dogs at Lake Colorado City State Park

Lake Colorado City State Park allows dogs into the park. Dogs must be on a leash in public areas of the park including on hiking trails. Owners must clean up after their dogs.

Dogs are not allowed inside any of the buildings, including cabins and bathrooms. Dogs are not allowed in the dedicated swimming area at the lake.

Colorado City, Texas

Colorado City, Texas is eight and a half miles from the park. Colorado City is the county seat of Mitchell, Texas and has a population of 4,000 people. The town has the Heart of West Texas Museum or get a bite to eat at Kelley Cafe. There are also gas stations and grocery stores.

Big Spring, Texas

Big Spring, Texas is 29 miles from the park. Big Spring is the county seat of Howard County, Texas and has a population of 26,000 people. Visit the Hangar 25 Air Museum and the refurbished Hotel Setlles. Big Spring State Park is located inside the town. 

Abilene, Texas

Abilene, Texas is 77 miles from the park. Abilene is the county seat of Taylor County, Texas and has a population of 125,000 people. There are many things to do in Abilene such as visit Frontier Texas or the Grace Museum.
