The town of Childress, Texas is the county seat of Childress County, Texas. Childress has a population of about 7,000 people. Childress is in the part of Texas known as the Texas Panhandle.

Childress is located 248 miles from Dallas, 117 miles from Amarillo, and 138 miles from Waco. Childress is located at the junction between the highways US 287, US 62 and US 83. Childress was not always located where it is now. Originally there were two towns, one named Childress and the other named Henry. Both towns were vying for the position of being the county seat of Childress county. Eventually the town of Henry won the position. As part of the compromise they agreed to give property in Henry to people and businesses who already owned property in Childress and to rename the town of Henry to Childress. In this way, the old town of Childress wound up moving over to the new location.

When the railroad came through the town experienced a period of growth.  The town built a hotel and a train depot and began to have more businesses. The location of Childress has made the town known as the gateway to the Texas Panhandle and agriculture and transportation has played an important role in the economy. Childress is on the crossroads of multiple highways and is a popular stop for people making long drives.
