History of Alpine, Texas

Alpine is the county seat of Brewster County, Texas. The Brewster County Courthouse was built in Alpine in 1888. The town grew up out of an area where cattlemen used to camp. When the railroad came through in 1882 a tent town was established for the families of the railroad workers.

Sul Ross University was established, under the name of Sul Ross Normal University, in 1920. Then Big Bend National Park was created, bringing more development to Alpine.
