Hillsboro has many historic buildings to see, but the historic courthouse is the best. Surrounded by a historic town square, the Hill County Courthouse was rebuilt after a fire in 1993. The building has been restored and is still in use as a functioning courthouse. Take some time to walk around the town square and admire the courthouse. There is lots to explore in the area.

Hill County Cell Block Museum

Free admission with optional donation. The historic jail which now serves as a museum. It is located walking distance from the courthouse and was a functioning jail for 90 years. It was built in 1893 and closed in 1983, when it transitioned into being a museum. The jail saw many criminals over the years including a member of the Barrow gang, of Bonnie and Clyde fame. Rumor has it that Elvis Presley spent a night in the jail when he was stationed in nearby Fort Hood.

History of Hillsboro

Hillsboro was established in 1853. Bonnie and Clyde were said to have taken a family hostage in Hillsboro in order to get a place to sleep when they were on the run. When Elvis Presley was stationed at Fort Hood he was said to frequent Hillsboro, and enjoyed eating at the Andrew’s Cafe.
