Shiner, Texas is a town in Lavaca County, Texas. Shiner has a population of about 2000 people. Shiner is 122 miles from Houston, 84 miles from Austin, and 92 miles from San Antonio.

The town was originally founded in 1885 and called Half Moon, but three years later was renamed after Henry B. Shiner who donated land have a train depot in town. The town was officially incorporated in 1890. The town has been heavily influenced by large numbers of Czech and German immigrants.

Shiner is known for being the home of the Spoetzl Brewery. The brewery manufactures Shiner Bock beer and is the oldest independent brewery in Texas. Shiner Bock is now no longer only sold in Texas but is sold in almost every state.

Spoetzl Brewery is obviously the main attraction in Shiner, Texas. You can tour the facility and and the end of the tour they will let you do some taste testing. The tours are only available on weekdays, and not available on weekends. Shiner is a very popular weekend getaway destination for people living in Austin and Houston because of its peaceful location and historic downtown, but if touring the brewery is important to you, make sure to plan your visit to include a weekday.

Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church

Shiner is home to one of the gorgeous historic Texas Painted Churches. Located on Avenue F is Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church. The Texas Painted Churches are a collection of churches through the Texas Hill Country area that were built primarily by Czech and German immigrants and extensively decorated on the inside with paintings.

The original church was built and dedicated in 1891. As the congregation expanded they needed more room and a new church was built in 1920. The new church is known for being very beautiful with murals and stained glass windows. This church has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983.

Antiques, Art and Beer is a unique bar located in a historic building in downtown Shiner, Texas. The building is from 1911 and has been decorated in a really interesting way. The bar has a wide selection of beer and wine. While in the bar you can also shop for antiques or souvenirs such as handmade soaps, candles and fudge. They also have an area where you can play board games, and a dog friendly closed in patio. 

Howard’s

Howards is a combination of corner store, gas station, and bar. There is a back patio where you can enjoy cold Shiner beer on tap and hang out. The front is more of a gas station with a convenience store. Enjoy the laid back atmosphere. 

Wehlausen Park

Welhausen Park is a historic park in Shiner. It has trees, a playground, and historical monuments including a display of a howitzer. There is free parking and picnic tables, but there are no restroom facilities.
