Cedar Hill State Park

Cedar Hill State Park opened in 1991. It is very close to Dallas and is a popular park to spend the day. It is known for the Penn Farm Agricultural History Center which is located on the grounds of the park and has reconstructed historic buildings.

The park is located 18 miles from Downtown Dallas in Cedar Hill, Texas.

Cost

The entry fee for Cedar Hill State Park is $7 per person over the age of 13. There is free admission for people ages 12 and under. 

There are additional fees for overnight stays which vary depending on the type of lodging or campsite.

To save money when visiting Cedar Hill State Park, I recommend looking at a Texas State Parks Pass. The pass costs $70 a year. The benefit of the pass is that it allows the pass holder, and any passengers in their vehicle to enter the park without paying the day use fee. 

Reservations

Reservations can be made in advance online. Reservations can be made for campsites or for day use. Reservations should be made as soon as you know your plans. 

Due to its proximity to Dallas, this park often reaches capacity, even for day use. If you do not have a reservation you may be turned away at the gate. 

Staying at Cedar Hill State Park

Campsites

Hike-in primitive campsites are $10 per night. They cannot be specifically reserved, but are in an open camping area. There is access to a chemical toilet. 

Campsites with electricity are $25 per night. They have a picnic table, fire ring, and hook ups for water and electricity. They have access to restrooms with showers in the vicinity. 

Full-hookup campsites are $30 per night. They have a fire ring and a picnic table. There are full hookups for water, sewage, and electricity. There are restrooms with showers available in the vicinity. 

Group Facilities

There is a pavilion that can be rented for large groups.

Hiking and Biking Trails

There are eight trails in the park that range in length from 0.6 miles all the way to 12 miles long. The trails are mixed use for both hiking and biking. The longer trails are popular for mountain bikers.

Shoreline Trail is a one-mile trail that is accessible.

DORBA Trail can be done as either a short trail of three miles, a medium trail of eight miles, or a long trail of twelve miles. This challenging trail was designed for off-road biking, but hiking is also permitted. 

What is there to do at Cedar Hill State Park?

You can fish in Joe Pool Lake. Fishing does not require a license from the shore in state parks. 

Swimming is allowed in the lake as well.

Have a picnic near the lake. There are picnic tables and even a playground.

Learn about history. The Penn Farm Agriculture History Center has reconstructed historical buildings.
