Lake Tawakoni State Park

Lake Tawakoni State Park opened in 2002. It is on the shores of Lake Tawakoni.

Cost

The entry fee for Lake Tawakoni State Park is $5 per person over the age of 13. There is free admission for people ages 12 and under. 

There are additional fees for overnight stays which vary depending on the type of lodging or campsite.

To save money when visiting Lake Tawakoni State Park, I recommend looking at a Texas State Parks Pass. The pass costs $70 a year. The benefit of the pass is that it allows the pass holder, and any passengers in their vehicle to enter the park without paying the day use fee. 

Reservations

Reservations can be made in advance online. Reservations can be made for campsites or for day use. Reservations should be made as soon as you know your plans. 

This is a popular park that often reaches capacity, even for day use. If you do not have a reservation you may be turned away at the gate. 

Staying at Lake Tawakoni State Park

Campsites

Campsites with electricity range from $20 – $24 per night. They have a picnic table, grill, fire ring, and lantern post. There is water and and electricity as well. Restrooms with showers are in the vicinity.

Full-hookup campsites are $24 per night. They have a picnic table, fire ring and lantern post. There are hookups for water and electric. Bathrooms with showers are in the vicinity. Some of the sites have lake access. 

Group Facilities

There is a group campsite for groups of up to 48 people. There is a fire ring, picnic tables, and lantern hooks. There is no water at the campsite. It is a one hundred yard walk to the campsite. 

There is an amphitheater which has lights and electricity and seats up to 100 people. 

Restrooms in Lake State Park

There are bathrooms provided throughout the park. Restrooms in the camping loops have showers. There are also restrooms near the picnic area by the lake. The walk to the restrooms from Spring Point Camping Loop is far. 

Hiking Trails

There are eight trails in the park, but most of them are less than half a mile long. 

Blackjack Trail is 1.5 miles long and the longest trail in the park. 

Osage Orange Trail is 0.8 miles long and is named after the type of tree. 

What is there to do at Lake Tawakoni State Park?

You can fish in Lake Twakoni. Fishing licenses are not required for fishing from the shores of a state park. The lake is 37,000 acres. There is a fish cleaning station and a boat ramp. A license is required for fishing off of a boat.

Swimming is allowed in Lake Tawakoni. There is a dedicated swimming area. Dogs are not allowed in the swimming area. 

Kayaks are available to rent in the park. Life jackets and paddles are included with rental fees.

Dogs at Lake Tawakoni State Park

Lake Tawakoni State Park allows dogs into the park. Dogs must be on a leash in public areas of the park including on hiking trails. Owners must clean up after their dogs.

Dogs are not allowed inside any of the buildings, including bathrooms. 

Dogs are not allowed in the dedicated swimming area in the lake. 

What to do near Lake Tawakani State Park

Willis Point, Texas

Willis Point, Texas is ten miles from the park and has a population of 3,500 people. You can stop by the town to pick up supplies for your camping trip or get gas. Stop by Bluebird Cafe for something to eat. 

Dallas, Texas

Dallas, Texas is 60 miles from the park. It is a very large city and has lots of museums, nightlife, and shopping.
