Lake Whitney State Park

Lake Whitney State Park opened in 1965. The park is on the shores of Lake Whitney.

Cost

The entry fee for Lake Whitney State Park is $5 per person over the age of 13. There is free admission for people ages 12 and under. 

There are additional fees for overnight stays which vary depending on the type of lodging or campsite.

To save money when visiting Lake Whitney State Park, I recommend looking at a Texas State Parks Pass. The pass costs $70 a year. The benefit of the pass is that it allows the pass holder, and any passengers in their vehicle to enter the park without paying the day use fee. 

Reservations

Reservations can be made in advance online. Reservations can be made for campsites or for day use. Reservations should be made as soon as you know your plans. 

This is a popular park that often reaches capacity, even for day use. If you do not have a reservation you may be turned away at the gate. 

Staying at Lake Whitney State Park

Campsites

Campsites with water are $14 per night. These campsites have a picnic table, fire ring with grill, and water hookup. There are bathrooms with showers in the vicinity. 

Campsites with electricity are $20 per night. These campsites have a picnic table, a fire ring with a grill, and hookups for water and electricity. There are bathrooms with showers in the vicinity. 

Full-hookup campsites are $24 per night. They have a picnic table, a fire ring with a grill and hookups for water, sewer, and electric. 

Cabins

Cabins are $50 per night. Up to four people are allowed to sleep inside the cabin, but tents are allowed outside the cabin. The cabin has water, electricity and air conditioning. There is a picnic table, a fire ring with a grill, and a lantern post. Dogs are not allowed in the cabin. 

Group Facilities

There is a group hall with a kitchen. The hall has electricity and air conditioning, as well as a full kitchen. Pets are not allowed in the hall. Tents are allowed around the hall. 

Restrooms in Lake Whitney State Park

There are bathrooms provided throughout the park. Restrooms in the camping loops have showers.

Hiking Trails

There are only two hiking trails at the park.

Two Bridges Trail is 0.9 miles and goes through a forest. 

Towash Forest Trail is 1.2 miles and has views of the lake. 

What is there to do at Lake Whitney State Park?

You can fish in Lake Whitney. Fishing licenses are not required for fishing from the shores of a state park. There is a fish cleaning shelter. 

Swimming is allowed in Lake Whitney. There is a dedicated swimming area. Dogs and glass containers are not allowed in the swimming area. 

You can kayak in the lake. 

Try you hand at nature photography or going birding. Armadillo, deer, and rabbits live in the park. 

Dogs at Lake Whitney State Park

Lake Whitney  State Park allows dogs into the park. Dogs must be on a leash in public areas of the park including on hiking trails. Owners must clean up after their dogs.

Dogs are not allowed inside any of the buildings, including cabins and bathrooms. 

Dogs are not allowed to swim in the dedicated swimming area.

What to do near Lake Whitney State Park

Whitney, Texas

Whitney, Texas is three miles from the park. Whitney has a population of 2,000 people and was where the movie The Vast of Night was filmed. Get breakfast at the Texas Great Country Cafe and Pie Pantry, or pick up camping supplies in town and get gas. 

Waco, Texas

Waco, Texas is 38 miles from the park. There are many great tourist attractions in Waco such as the Waco Mammoth National Monument, the Magnolia Market, or the Dr. Pepper Museum.

Fort Worth, Texas

Fort Worth, Texas is 72 miles from the park. Fort Worth is a major city and has a lot of museums, restaurants, and nightlife. Check out the Fort Worth Stockyards.
