Lockhart State Park

Lockhart State Park was built by the CCC. They began construction in 1935. The park is known for having a golf course.

Cost

The entry fee for Lockhart State Park is $3 per person over the age of 13. There is free admission for people ages 12 and under. 

The swimming pool requires an additional ticket. Tickets are $2 for people 13 and older, $1 for children 6-12 and free for children 5 and under. Tickets can be reserved online in advance. 

The golf course fees are not covered by the park entry fee. There are greens fees and golf cart and golf club rental fees. Reservations may be made in advance. 

There are additional fees for overnight stays which vary depending on the type of campsite.

To save money when visiting Lockhart State Park, I recommend looking at a Texas State Parks Pass. The pass costs $70 a year. The benefit of the pass is that it allows the pass holder, and any passengers in their vehicle to enter the park without paying the day use fee. 

Reservations

Reservations can be made in advance online. Reservations can be made for campsites or for day use. Reservations should be made as soon as you know your plans. 

This is a popular park that often reaches capacity, even for day use. If you do not have a reservation you may be turned away at the gate. 

The golf course and swimming pool can both be reserved online in advance. 

Staying at Lockhart State Park

Campsites

Campsites with electricity are $20 per night. The campsites have a picnic table, a fire ring, and a grill. There is water and an electric hookup. Bathrooms with showers are available in the vicinity. 

Full hookup campsites are $24 per night. These campsites have a picnic table, a fire ring, and upright grill, and hookups for water, sewer and electric. There are bathrooms with showers in the vicinity.

Group Facilities

There is a group hall with a kitchen. It has room for 75 people to use it during the day. There is a patio, picnic tables and a full kitchen. There is electricity and air conditioning.

Hiking Trails

There are eleven trails in the park, but almost all of them are less than half a mile long. 

Rattlesnake Run is a short, but challenging hike. 

Persimmon Trail is only 0.2 miles but it goes up the hillside.

What is there to do at Lockhart State Park?

You can fish in Clear Fork Creek. Fishing licenses are not required for fishing from the shores of a state park.

Try you hand at nature photography or going birding. Armadillo, deer, and rabbits live in the park. There is also a nice waterfall.

Dogs at Lockhart State Park

Lockhart State Park allows dogs into the park. Dogs must be on a leash in public areas of the park including on hiking trails. Owners must clean up after their dogs.

Dogs are not allowed inside any of the buildings, including bathrooms. 

What to do near Lockhart State Park

Lockhart, Texas

Lockhart, Texas is only 3.5 miles from the state park and is the barbecue capital of Texas. There is an HEB so you can pick up groceries for your camping trip. Explore the historic downtown or get barbecue at Kreuz Market. 

San Marcos, Texas

San Marcos, Texas is 20 miles from the park. San Marcos has Stokes Park along the San Marcos River. It is also home to Texas State University.
