Monahans Sandhills State Park

Monahans Sandhills State Park is known for the distinctive sand dunes through the park. This park is very unique and different from the other parks because of the sand dunes.

Cost

The entry fee for Monahans Sandhills State Park is $4 per person over the age of 13. There is free admission for people ages 12 and under. 

There are additional fees for overnight stays which vary depending on the type of lodging or campsite.

To save money when visiting Monahans Sandhills State Park, I recommend looking at a Texas State Parks Pass. The pass costs $70 a year. The benefit of the pass is that it allows the pass holder, and any passengers in their vehicle to enter the park without paying the day use fee. 

Reservations

Reservations can be made in advance online. Reservations can be made for campsites or for day use. Reservations should be made as soon as you know your plans. 

This is a popular park that often reaches capacity, even for day use. If you do not have a reservation you may be turned away at the gate. 

Staying at Monahans Sandhills State Park

Campsites

Campsites with electricity are $15 per night. They have a picnic table, a fire ring, a shade shelter, and a grill. There are hookups for water and electricity. Bathrooms with showers are available in the vicinity.

Equestrian Campsites

Horse campsites with water are $15 per night plus $2 per horse per day. These sites share a parking area. Tents are not allowed in these campsites. Water is available. There are picnic tables and grills. 

Group Facilities

The group hall with kitchen is $30 per night. It was built in 1903. The building has water and electricity. There is a kitchen with a sink, a microwave, a refrigerator, stove and oven. There is a bathroom with a toilet and a sink. There tables and a grill. 

Restrooms in Monahans Sandhills State Park

There are bathrooms provided throughout the park. There is a restroom in the camping loop with showers. 

Hiking Trails

There is a short nature trail near the visitor center. 

There is the roadway that goes through the park. 

You can walk around in the park off of the trails, and climb on the sand dunes.

What is there to do at Monahans Sandhills State Park?

The main activity in this park is climbing the sand dunes.

You can rent a disk to sled down the dunes. 

You can ride your horse in the park. 

The visitor center has nice displays about the animals in the park. I spent a long time in the visitor center talking to the rangers. They were very friendly and had a lot of great information.

Dogs at Monahans Sandhills State Park

Monahans Sandhills State Park allows dogs into the park. Dogs must be on a leash in public areas of the park. Owners must clean up after their dogs.

Dogs are not allowed inside any of the buildings, including bathrooms.

Monahans, Texas

Monahans, Texas is 5 miles from the park. Monahans is the county seat of Ward County, Texas and has a population of 7,000 people. Visit the Million Barrel Museum and learn about the attempts to store the massive quantities of oil that were being produced in the Permian Basin. The town also has gas stations and a Walmart if you need to pick up any camping supplies. 

Odessa, Texas

Odessa, Texas is 31 miles from the park. Odessa is the county seat of Ector County, Texas and has a population of 112,000 people. Odessa is known for high school football, which was popularized by Friday Night Lights. Visit the Odessa Meteor Crater or the Ellen Noël Art Museum. 

Midland, Texas

Midland, Texas is 53 miles from the park. Midland is the county seat of Midland County, and has a population of 132,000 people.
