Possum Kingdom State Park opened in 1950. Some of the structures were built by the CCC. The park is known for Lake Possum Kingdom.
In 2011 wildfires seriously damaged the park.

Cost
The entry fee for Possum Kingdom State Park is $4 per person over the age of 13. There is free admission for people ages 12 and under.
There are additional fees for overnight stays which vary depending on the type of lodging or campsite.
To save money when visiting Possum Kingdom State Park, I recommend looking at a Texas State Parks Pass. The pass costs $70 a year. The benefit of the pass is that it allows the pass holder, and any passengers in their vehicle to enter the park without paying the day use fee.
Reservations
Reservations can be made in advance online. Reservations can be made for campsites or for day use. Reservations should be made as soon as you know your plans.
This is a popular park that often reaches capacity, even for day use. If you do not have a reservation you may be turned away at the gate.
Staying at Daingerfield State Park
Campsites
Walk-in primitive campsites are $10 per night. The campsites are a short walk from the parking area. There is a picnic table, a fire ring, and a lantern post. Bathrooms are a long walk away.
Campsites with water are $12 per night. There is a picnic table, water, and a bathroom in the area.
Campsites with electricity are $20 – $25 per night. They have a picnic table, fire ring with a grill, and hookups for water and electricity. There are restrooms with showers in the vicinity.
Cabins
Four person cabins are $75 – $100 per night. The cabins have electricity and air conditioning. There is a kitchen sink, refrigerator, stove, and oven. There is a bathroom with a shower. There are beds and a table with chairs. Linens and kitchen utensils are not provided. Dogs are not allowed in the cabin or in the cabin area. Tents are not allowed in the cabin area.
Longhorn Lodge has room for eight people and is $135 per night. The lodge has electricity and air conditioning. There is a kitchen with water, a fridge, and a stove with an oven. There is a bathroom with a shower. There are beds and a table and chairs. Kitchen utensils and linens are not provided. Dogs are not allowed in the cabin or in the area.
Restrooms in Possum Kingdom State Park
There are bathrooms provided throughout the park. Restrooms in some of the camping loops have showers.
Hiking Trails
There are three hiking trails in the park.
Lakeview Trail is 1.4 miles long and the longest trail in the park. It is also the easiest trail.
Longhorn Trail is only 0.4 miles long, but is more challenging.
Chaparral Ridge Trail is 0.5 miles long, but it is also a more challenging hike.
What is there to do at Possum Kingdom State Park?
You can fish in Possum Kingdom Lake. Fishing licenses are not required for fishing from the shores of a state park. There is a fishing pier and a fish cleaning station.
Swimming is allowed in Possum Kingdom Lake. There is a dedicated swimming area. Glass containers and dogs are not allowed in the dedicated swimming area.
Kayaks and paddle are available to rent in the park.
Dogs at Possum Kingdom State Park
Possum Kingdom State Park allows dogs into the park. Dogs must be on a leash in public areas of the park including on hiking trails. Owners must clean up after their dogs.
Dogs are not allowed inside any of the buildings, including cabins and bathrooms. Dogs are not allowed in the area around cabins either. Dogs are not allowed in the dedicated swimming area.

Mineral Wells, Texas
Mineral Wells, Texas is 52 miles from the park. Mineral Wells has a population of 15,000 people. It was famous for the mineral water spas in the area. Stay at the Crazy Water Hotel which was renovated in 2021. Happy Days Diner is a classic diner.
Breckenridge, Texas
Breckenridge, Texas is 30 miles from the park. Breckenridge is the county seat of Stephens County and has a population of 5,200 people. Visit the Swenson Memorial Museum or get some barbecue at Pit Stop Bar-B-Q.
