It is the county seat of Hall County, meaning that it is where the Hall County Courthouse is located. Hall County is named after Warren DeWitt Clinton Hall, the former secretary of war for the Republic of Texas. A bit over 2,000 people live in Memphis, Texas.

Back then having a railroad depot was the difference between a town thriving or not. Story has it that there wasn’t supposed to be a railroad depot built there, but residents decided to force the issue by soaping the tracks until the trains stopped there anyways. Seems to have worked out because once the train depot went in, a lot of other businesses sprang up.
